Special lecture by Mr. Dirk Hebecker as a guest speaker

OBJECTIVE.

On May 20, 2024, we were honored to have Mr. Dirk Hebecker as a guest speaker in the course of Advanced Seminar 2. In addition to the first-year students, two students from the second-year MSDA group attended for this special occasion. Mr. Hebecker, who is now based in Wakayama, served as the twelfth representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representation in Japan after working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Germany and the German Embassy in Hanoi, as well as for UNHCR’s headquarters.

In the class, Mr Hebecker described the various humanitarian crises that cause mass displacement, such as refugees, internally displaced persons and irregular migrants. He also emphasized the important role of UNHCR, using illustrative slides full of charts, maps and photos.

After all, 100 minutes were far from enough! The bell mercilessly rang before initiating a Q and A session.

Thank you very much, Mr. Hebecker, for your impressive talk and for driving all the way up to Tokyo and back!
